Mark Newhouse: FWAY Chairperson
Mark, born in Germany to Holocaust survivors, got his BA, and MA from Queens College. He loved teaching in Central Islip, New York, and SUNY Old Westbury. He was named Teacher of the Year by the New York State Reading Association (1989).
His books include: Welcome to Monstrovia, a fantasy legal mystery, Silver Medal, Benjamin Franklin Book Awards, Bronze Medal, Readers’ Favorite Book Competition, and 3rd Prize, Royal Palm Literary Awards. Its sequel, The Case of the Disastrous Dragon, is a Top Ten Children’s Book, P&E Readers Poll, and 2nd Place, Royal Palm Literary Awards. The Rockhound Science Mysteries, won Learning Magazine’s Teachers’ Choice Award; and The Midnight Diet Club took First Prize, RPLA. His stories have won various honors and appear in the FWA Collections, Journeys, Tales 2 Inspire, and Writers Digest. Picture books include: Alice in Batsylvania, (1st Place, RPLA, Readers Favorite 5 Star), Santa’s Speeding Ticket, A Bite Before Christmas, and Dreidel Dog.
He was founder/president of Writers League; Writers 4 Kids, and Editor-in-Chief for The Story Shop, Holiday Helpings and Critter Capers. He writes the “Writing Bug”, monthly column for Village Neighbors magazine and has been a judge and rubric coordinator for RPLA. He is eager to work as FWAY’s new Chairman and thanks Serena and Kristen for giving him ‘big shoes’ to fill.
